In my Graphic Design for the Food Industry class, I assigned a cereal box design project. My students had to use CANVA to create the art for the front, sides, and back panels of the cereal box. I have always loved Pixar films, and I used one of their best films, “Up” as an example. The House is so iconic I had to use it as well as the three main characters, Carl, Russell, and Doug. I added just enough graphic information to “invite” cereal eaters, but not too much as to stray away from the “friendliness” feel I wanted to convey.

The idea for the “cutouts” was to bring a sense of nostalgia for adults who grew up with cutout-style play patterns, who are having kids of their own, to encourage young people to have an active way to rethink how to “play” and be more environment-aware at the same time. The cutouts also allow for fans of “Up” to re-introduce themselves to the joy and wonder of watching the film and appreciate the characters while still having an interactive play experience.
